As computer technology continues to advance, we retire older and struggling machines in favor of newer ones with faster processing, better graphics capabilities, the next and newest operating system, and higher display resolutions. Along with that comes the desire to install old and beloved games with the anticipation of playing them on increased and more glorious settings. Unfortunately, like me, you may have installed your BFME games on that new system only to watch it fail to load for the first time. Many people erroneously (but in good sense) simply assume at this point that their new operating system is now too advanced and that the BFME games are too old to be supported. Most people are making a switch from Windows XP/Vista to Vista/7. They may also be making a switch from 32-bit to 63-bit. Thankfully, the BFME games are actually still fully compatible with Windows Vista and Windows 7, both their 32- and 64-bit versions. EA, being a bit on the stupid side, did not include support for recognition of many of the widescreen display resolutions that are now commonplace. BFME I forces you to use the tiny and ill-fitting resolution of 1024x768. BFME II and ROTWK just crash outright at start-up. However, the games run beautifully and perfectly once forced to widescreen resolutions using a custom made and placed Options.ini file in its application data folder. The zip file below contains both an Options.ini file ready to go and detailed instructions on how to use it. Simply download and extract. Links / Downloads

Some of the 2-D interface art is stretched in widescreen. I really need to write a tutorial on how to increase the resolution of the game for widscreen monitors while still maintaining the original aspect ratio. Elric - Monday January 24, 2011 - 8:51 For my BFME 2 (using Vista) My game still works... But thank you for this it will still fix my widescreen problem. |
