TREES AND PROPS ETC

If you thought texturing was mind-numbing, well... it gets worse.

WARNING: The following may give you Repetive Strain Injury (RSI)!

Trees

A map should have a variety of trees. Not too many, not too little. Look at EA's maps for inspiration as well (it's helped me improve my technique a lot of late).

Choose a selection of trees, they should compliment each other well. Copy (CTRL+C) them.

Then Paste (CTRL+V) them around the map. Place them individually, don't leave in their copy-and-position unless it looks good.

Things to remember
- economy plots should have trees near them for lumbermills.
- dense clumps of trees are bad for pathing
- there should be enough room between clumps of trees for units to walk.
- try to have a good density of trees and a good layout, as dense clumps look bad if there are no other clumps near, and single trees look bad if there are lots of other single trees nearby.

Shrubs

Do the same with shrubs. If you copy them in a spread-out way, then you can just paste them a lot without moving them individually. Though this shouldn't be done all the time, but use your head, don't let everywhere look the same.

Rocks

And again, this time with rocks...

Roads/Paths/Footprints

Add roads/paths too. But if you're in BFME1, don't overlap with any plots as they will show up on top and not look very good.

Also, if macrotexture is off in WB, the roads/paths will not have any alpha and therefore be really obvious.

Sounds

Put a load of sounds on the map (Civilian>Audio). Focus on bits like villages, rivers and trees. Think which bits are noisest. You can also select an object, then give it a noise in the object properties.

What now?

If you're a BFME II mapper, you'll need to add farm templates and wall hubs. See this tutorial for more information: http://www.the3rdage.net/item-34

Test it in-game. Play it. Enjoy it. Put it up for download on this site. Once you've improved enough, join a mod team if you want, or just continue to make maps for people to download.

It's a castle for BFME 1. The smaller one is a camp, the even smaller one is an outpost/expansion.

The direction refers to where the gate is.

Windrider - Saturday October 10, 2009 - 14:07

the large black circles with the directions - what do they do? How about the smaller black circles with the red font and the 3 meshed black circles?

@militaryman: That's part of WB. It only shows some tiles in an effort to cut down on the resource usage. If you want to enable the full map even when showing many tiles, go to View -> Show All of 3D Map (Or press Ctrl+A).
